Preparing For Holiday Visitors

There is no more denying it, the holidays are upon us. As soon as Thanksgiving hits, you will be in a mad-rush to get your Christmas shopping done. Then, before you know it, there are New Year’s activities to plan and go through. No matter what combination of holidays you celebrate, this is the time of year that can feel both nostalgic, hectic, and stressful, all at the same time. One of the key contributing factors to the stress and chaos of this time of years is the holiday visitors that we will all inevitably entertain over the season.

Prepare for the Holidays

Whether it is your in-laws coming over for Thanksgiving, your nieces and nephews tearing up your house on Christmas morning, or just a family dinner that you are hosting, there are a lot of things to consider when preparing for holiday visitors. We have come up with a little list that will help you in your preparations and hopefully help you retain some of your holiday sanity.

Make Plans – leaving things for the last minute is the perfect way to get overwhelmed. Find out what everyone’s plans are and then coordinate your schedule to make plans to accommodate.

Temporary De-cluttering- an easy thing to say would be, “clean out all of your clutter.” But, we all know that the reality of that is much more complex. Instead, try to find temporary, out-of-the-way places for some of your things that might take up a lot of space. For instance, if you have a cat hotel that you are just in love with, but it takes up a fair amount of the living room, consider putting it in an out-of-the-way closet for the holidays, just until the family pulls back out of the driveway. It will save you space and make your home appear bigger.

Cleaning Gear – don’t stress yourself out over cleaning. When a spill happens, you clean it and move on. Keep your cleaning gear handy, but don’t let it dominate your mind during the holidays. Whether you are entertaining or not, the holidays are a time to spend with family, not on all fours trying to scrub the carpets every time someone drops something. Try to enjoy yourself, even when spills or dirt happens.
