How to Clean Grout

Cleaning grout isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time. But let’s face it: over time grout gets pretty gross. With kids and pets walking across it, it’s no wonder that sparkly white floor filler suddenly turns gray over time. Have no fear. There are many quick, affordable grout cleaning methods that don’t require harsh chemicals. Here is how to clean grout.

Steam Power

Use a quick steamer to  steam away dirt and grime. Simply fill your machine with distilled water and let it turn to steam, then go to work. One thing you’ll want to do is keep a towel with you so you can steam, wipe, then steam, wipe. So you get the first layer of dirt off, then the next layer.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar and baking soda create a chemical reaction which cause dirt and grime to bubble up. You will be amazed at how deep of a clean this gives you. Once all the grime is pulled up you should rinse with clean water and just wipe away. One thing to note here is that some people worry about the smell of vinegar permeating the floor. Once vinegar evaporates you won’t have the smell. Just be sure to do it several hours before guests arrive.

Another great use for baking soda and vinegar is to keep your tub free from soap scum build up. Sprinkle it on and then spray the vinegar on the tub and watch it go to work.

Hot Water and Soap

If your grime build up isn’t so bad, then you might be able to get away with using hot soap, water, and a scrub brush. Mix up a little Dawn dish soap and hot water and go to town scrubbing. This can be messy, but it’s a good opportunity to get the kids involved in cleaning. Since it doesn’t require harsh chemicals or steam, give them a brush to scrub alongside you.
